Introduction

This is a travel report about my rucksack tour to Corsica with lots of information for those of you who might want to imitate it. We travelled from Saarland (a small state in the southwest of Germany) to south France by train, went to Corsica by ferry and passed one day at the eastern coast before we traversed the island half-way on the rather tough footpath called GR 20 in ten days. After our hiking tour we spent two days in the interior before we went to the northeastern coast by train to let our trip end on the beach. After three days at the coast we returned by ferry and train via south France to Germany.

We, that is Markus Koch, Thomas Groß (thomas@familie-gross.de), and Christian Blum (c.blum@resolution.de). We are 23 years old (at the time this took place), and we all have been studying Electrical Engineering for three years at the University of Saarland at Saarbrücken, Germany. We do not just live and study in Saarland, we were also born there.

None of us knows these days when, how and why we chose to travel to Corsica. We wanted to make such a trip for a long time, and now the chance occured. I think we chose Corsica because we wanted to visit a region that's not too far away (we are no millionaires) and that's sparsely populated and quite diversified. Corsica matches each criteria.

It was the first longer trip with rucksacks for Thomas and Markus; I've been to Scotland and Ireland last year (see Lothar Fritsch's travelogue Scotland/Ireland 1992). But we've been two times to a secondary chain of mountains in France called "Les Vosges" for four days as a kind of training camp.

I've taken efforts not to just line up the events and I hope I succeeded; you'll be the judge, it's my first attempt to write about a non-technical subject. Lots of information has been added for those who think about visiting Corsica. Feedback is greatly appreciated! Just mail me if you need further details on certain things.

Ah, yes, the actual travelogue starts somewhere in the middle of this document; the first chapters attempt to chime you in with the country and give detailed information for those who follow us.

Irony and sarcasm as well as playful anger has not been marked; I rely on the brains of the reader who'll hopefully not think I'm an idiot or kind of bearish.
